I did a talk on the basics of Feng Shui the other evening to a group of ladies. The atmosphere was lovely and I had a most enjoyable time.
There was one lady (I will call her Jane) who lost her mother a couple of years back. She had cleared out her mother’s house and had kept all her furniture and clothes. She and the rest of the family now feel totally overwhelmed and have a constant feeling of hopelessness. They are now cluttered indoors and have no room to move because of all the possessions. The trouble is Jane ‘can’t let go’ of anything thing, she really does not want to part with any of Mum’s stuff. Now it could be that she is still grieving, or she feels guilt at letting go.
I could only give Jane advice and explain about clutter. At the end of the day unless anyone is willing to change then there is nothing I can do, the change has to come from ‘within’ and ‘intention’ has to go with it or it is a waste of time.
We all know it’s easier to create mess and clutter than keep things tidy, although I do know people who clear my cup away before I have finished the last dregs of my tea – It’s all about balance.
So, how about making a plan? Let’s de-clutter next weekend! You can either take ‘baby steps’ and throw a little out or go the whole hog and have a massive clean out. I personally favour a big clean out as I always feel so much satisfaction after, but it is up to you. If you are doing ‘baby steps’ just make sure you follow up and say de-clutter once a week. If you have family get them all involved, make a fun’ day of it with the promise of something special for dinner to reward everyone.
Here are the guidelines:
Donate or throw out anything that is……
- Unloved
- Unwanted
- Unused
- Not been worn for 12 months
You will be surprised at how much you will let go if you follow the rules. Pile everything up in one room, this will then give you some idea of how much is actually going rather than putting it directly into bags.
You can always take photographs of items, that way you will still have the memory but not the clutter.
A cluttered home is a drain on your energy and time. Think about how much more leisure time you will have once you have everything under control. It is easier to do a little ‘maintenance’ every week than feeling constantly overwhelmed and hopeless when you are surrounded with clutter.
My son has more T shirts than you can shake the proverbial stick at – many have not been worn for months…… so, I take them out of his wardrobe and place them in the spare room out of sight. If he has not asked for them within 3 months then I bag them up and take them to the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity shop – simple.
So come on join me next weekend, send me photos of what you are getting rid of and I will put them on my blog.
Remember, making space will encourage more wonderful things to come into your life.
